You've signed up to help: what do you need to know?
When you register: You will get an email confirmation from firstname.lastname@example.org that includes directions to the meet-up location for your site and date. All communication will be done via email (including weather cancellation).
The day you volunteer: Meet up with the researchers at the designated date, time and location identified in your email confirmation. Be at the assigned parking lot at 1pm. We will check in, fill out a few forms and carpool to the research site.
Once on site, we’ll teach you how to collect freshwater and terrestrial bugs, and then we will all jump right into collecting bugs! Working in teams supervised by the researchers, we will capture as many insects as we can to determine how many bugs there are and what types there are in that location on that date. We will try to identify as much as possible in the field, but we will also take the insects back to the lab, where the identification can be confirmed under a microscope. Data will be available on our website within days, so you can see how your team did and how the number of bugs is changing over the summer.
Things to bring:
Positive attitude and sense of adventure!
Water, snacks, sunscreen, bug spray (positive attitude only goes so far... you want to be comfortable).
Bring your own rubber boots or waders if you are interested in getting in the water (or wear shoes you are ok getting wet). We will have some boots and waders available to share as well.
Wear clothes you are ok getting dirty.
Definitely also bring a camera to document your experience. Tag us on social media!
